No other IT topic has triggered as much controversy in
recent years; to filter or not to filter. Frankly, in a corporate
environment, the discussion should be moot - filter out all
non-business activities. This improves productivity and reduces
liability. For institutions serving the public, this discussion
is much more emotional. The argument is typically "Freedom
of information versus liability avoidance". Our recommendation
is to acquire and implement a filtering solution regardless
of your decision to filter. The better filtering solutions
have excellent report generation capabilities that look at
who is going where and when. If your decision is not to filter,
having this information will either enforce your belief you
do not need it or give you pause for thought. In any case,
make sure you have your Internet Usage policy in place and
acknowledged by all employees.
